The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
