The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
