Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also included leaders in different industries.
